I have been tucked up in the warm busy drawing for the last winter months and getting back to what I love, figurative painting, see the figure above which is one of the latest. In a way I have come full circle to my student days of painting and collaging figures together. I took this photo of the painting below at my friends house in Germany, one from my student days 16 years ago.
Inspiration for new drawings comes from watching people; how they stand, sit or move or it may be colours that attract me to look again. Very often I am inspired by lots of images I then piece things together. Knowing when things don't really work is something that can't really be learnt but just goes on experience and debate! I then do lots of drawings for figures and choose from photos or video. I have even more recently starting modelling poses myself with Roy taking photos of me.
Striking a pose with your own body is a curious thing, certain poses give strong signals positively and negatively and for me it is all about the shape of the body and whether it is interesting enough for a painting. This is one of the reasons that dance holds a strong attraction for me, dancers are expert shape makers. You can catch up on other latest drawings here in my Instagram feed here
Coming up soon: Group exhibition in Worthing, dates and venue April and over Easter, plus the annual May Open House in Brighton.
