Since the Brighton Art Fair in September I have been busy working on large painting commissions and unusually I have been asked by two clients in one street. In fact they live two doors from each other. One of the clients are very good friends and the other I met at the Brighton Open Houses this May.
Both have wonderful very light spaces that lead into an open plan kitchen living space opening out onto lovely gardens. Both requested the need for a large paintings with vibrant colour as the spaces were designed to add colour afterwards. The sizes for the paintings were chosen by the client and I recommended a canvas of 150 x 100cm for the space. With the only criteria of 'lots of colour please' I then set to work after creating draft drawings to show each client.
Over the years I have come to realise that it is quite tricky for the client and for myself to know what is required so actually visiting and seeing the space is invaluable. This gives me a good opportunity of chatting and getting a feel for what sort of things people like and would want in their home. Once I am back in the studio and gathering plenty of ideas I then email drawings and wait a response. Not every first or second drawing gets the approval sometimes it is the third but having coloured drawings to show the client first is invaluable.
So with one commission down and another just started, this time with 'neon colour' I am thrilled to be supplying one part of a Brighton street with my work!
